Who We Are

The organization was founded in 1901 by its pioneer and first president, the respected Gagan Chandra Biswas, and was officially registered on December 11, 1929. With the passage of time and changing eras, due to the negligence of state power, this community has been completely ignored and deprived of all opportunities and privileges. The Mahishya community resides in West Bengal, constituting over 37% of the population, numbering approximately 3.7 crore. This vast population is continuously striving to reach its fundamental goals.

Rich with historical memories and pride, the Mahishya society holds a special and decisive place in the history of West Bengal. Since independence, despite many political upheavals and many leaders from our community participating in state administration, our society has remained neglected. There is no room for debate; we must move forward unitedly. Our state, district, and block-level branches have become actively functional. Through everyone's collective effort, we are determined to take a leading role in national politics.

Our Legacy

A review of the past history of the Mahishyas reveals that the name Mahishya was derived from the ancient city of Mahishmati, located on the banks of the Narmada River. Historian Sudhir Sarkar mentions that the current main settlement of the Mahishyas is in south-western Bengal and the western part of the Ganges delta. According to Pandit Lalmohan Vidyanidhi and Dharma Chandra Majumdar, the extremely powerful Mahishya caste was divided into four categories: Alprapati, Gajapati, Narapati, and Chharapati.

According to records, there is mention of peasant households of Kaivarta descent on the Balaikuri-Sultanpur Annapasas island. Historian Swayam Bhattacharya noted that in Varendra, Kaivarta farmers and fishermen—that is, those engaged in boating and agriculture—exclusively represented the Santrakshapadas. In ancient Bengal, the water-based communities were highly influential, playing a significant and ubiquitous role as royal officials in the court. This caste is a community rich in diverse culture and heritage.

The Bangiya Mahishya Samiti was established in 1901, but in the nineteenth century, this organization emerged as a formidable social force through government registration. Its main objective was to protect the history, heritage, and social rights of the Mahishya community. The glorious history of the Mahishyas is not confined to Bengal but is carried with pride by this community spread across modern West Bengal, India, and the world. Long respected, this class has remained connected to agriculture while bringing education to every home, a legacy they continue to uphold today.
